This district lies just west of Yellowstone National Park and north of Hebgen Lake. The majority of the district is in the Gallatin National Forest and there is a portion of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness in the district. A Forest Service cabin known as the Cabin Creek cabin is located in the heart of the district and can be reserved and rented by the night.
This district has historically been a good solid goat district. There are several different goat populations within this district. Billies in the 9” range or better can be available in this district. The goat population is down from historic highs, but is still good and stable.
The terrain from the north shore of Hebgen Lake rises toward the north. The elevation gain is moderate until you approach the wilderness and the high peaks. From here it gets steep up to treeline and above. There are numerous rocky ridges scattered throughout the district. One in particular is Skyline Ridge it is quite spectacular. Elevation gains of 3,000 feet can be a daily experience. Higher peaks in this area are all found above timberline.
There are numerous access points into this district and good Forest Service trails throughout. The major access points are Beaver Creek on the west, Cabin Creek on the south, Tepee Creek on the east and Sage Creek on the north. Most of the access into the goat country will be on foot or horseback from the trailheads.
A majority of the mountains are forested with pine and fir trees, but there are numerous rock spine ridges and rock outcroppings throughout. The subalpine basins have grasses, forbs and short shrubs. The high peaks are above timberline and have alpine grasses and forbs.
Bring your own camp with you, there are numerous places to camp. There are many campgrounds available, most of them are along Hebgen Lake. Bring your fishing pole as fishing can be excellent at times. West Yellowstone has numerous motels, restaurants and gas stations. Yellowstone Park is only minutes away to enjoy.
