The base of the mountain is around 6,000 feet and in a few short miles the plateau is over 10,000 feet. Lower elevations along creek drainages have trees and hunters typically stay above the tree line all the way to the top. This district is extremely steep and both drainages are almost vertical. This district is unique in that you can drive to 10,000 feet plus and access the Line Creek Plateau, a huge flat bench and the goats will be below you.
Highway 212 takes you to the top of the Beartooth Plateau. There is the Line Creek trailhead at over 10,000 feet. This trail leads out onto the plateau and from here you will be hunting down, either Line Creek or Wyoming Creek. These drainages are extremely steep and getting down to the goats can be tough. Be aware of the Wyoming state line.
Areas near stream bottoms and along slide slopes are timbered with spruce and fir. The rest of the slope to the top is covered with subalpine grasses and rocks. Steep talus slopes leading up to the Beartooth Plateau have moss and lichens. The plateau is covered with alpine grass and forbs.
There are different options for this hunt. Camp in the goat district or stay in a motel and hike in every day. There are places to camp on the plateau. With a little bit of glassing you will spot goats from the highway. Red Lodge has restaurants, gas and motels.
