This small unit is located in southern Montana and within the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness. This area is very remote and backpack or horseback hunting will be the only real options. Access is great in this unit with a number of high mountain lakes, and their subsequent trails, being found here. Snow storms can hit this country early in the early and can pose the biggest threat to access.
A good number of goats can be found here but early snow storms can make access difficult when waiting for goats to "hair out".
Most of this district is comprised of the extremely rough and rugged Beartooth Mountain range. The Beartooth is steep, rocky, rugged and can serve up nasty weather conditions with little notice. Hunters planning to hunt the backcountry need to be experienced and well prepared. Glassing opportunities will be plenty but physically closing the distance on animals can be tough.
The Beartooth Mountains are comprised of thick Douglas fir and ponderosa pine forests with cottonwood and willow creek and river bottoms winding throughout. Above timberline there are large grassy plateaus that green up in the summer time.
All of the access into this unit will either be on foot or with the use of livestock. A good trail system works its way into the heart of the unit but hunters will need to travel ten plus miles to reach the best goat habitat. Physical preparation will be very important for this hunt.
The only options for camping within the unit will be primitive, and primarily through the means of backpacking gear. Hunters can camp along the Boulder River Rd but very few hunting opportunities will exist in the immediate area. Groceries and gear will need to be purchased prior to leaving on the hunt.
