The Humboldt and West Humboldt ranges hold good numbers of deer as well as a few antelope, which are more on foothills and lowlands. Hunters can drive to most public land but must hike or ride horses to reach some isolated parts.

The West Humboldt Range east of Lovelock and the Humboldt Range northeast of town are the major landmarks. Both can be seen from Interstate 80, which runs along the western boundary. Parts of both ranges are steep, but most of the land is flat to moderately steep. The remainder of the unit is relatively mild to flat.

Some large parcels of BLM are in the northern and central part of the Humboldt Range, but the West Humboldt Range and much of the Humboldt Range are a mixture of private and BLM land in a checkerboard patter. The largest contiguous acreages of private property are between Lovelock and Humboldt Wildlife Refuge and along Interstate 80 south of Rye Patch Reservoir.

Desert brush dominates most of the units. Portions of Humboldt Range is dominated by pinyon and Juniper stands, while upper elevations exhibit Intermittent stands of aspens and mountain mahogany. Playa dominates some of the low lying valleys.

Carry plenty of supplies, food, water, and spare tires. Motels are in Lovelock, Fallon and Winnemucca. Most hunters camp along public roads. Fuel and supplies are sold at Ms. B’s truck stop in Mill City on I-80.
