This large unit is comprised of Diamond Valley and the Diamond Mountains located in Eureka County as well as Newark Valley located in White Pine County. This unit has a large and diverse topography to hunt for a wide range of sportsman. There are private land holdings in this unit but this is a large area with lots of public ground.
Unit 144 has the larger population of mule deer than its sister units.
The terrain is greatly varied along the range, with low lying valleys containing low sage and agriculture fields, to peaks reaching over 10,000 feet of elevation. Both sides of the range the terrain builds fairly rapidly in elevations.
There are plenty of public roads that range from maintained gravel roads to four-wheel drive and ATV trails that will lead to great starting points. Private land does have some impact to the west side of the range. Check hunt unit map for Northern boundary, Highway 50 on the Southern end, Highway 278 and Sadler Brown Rd on the Western side, Newark Valley Rd and Road 1 make up the Eastern Boundary.
There are large sagebrush valleys and irrigated crop lands that lead into hills covered with Juniper and Pinion trees around 6000 to 7500 feet roughly. From around 7500 to 8500 feet it turns into open sagebrush basins with aspen pockets along water sources and ridges lined with mahogany and rock outcroppings. Above 8500 feet the terrain turns into vertical ridges and mountains that have large pines with steep cliffs and rock formations with large open sagebrush basins.
On the southern end of the unit the town of Eureka lies in Highway 50. There is lodging, restaurants and the main stop for fuel in this unit. There alot of great camping spots along both sides of the range that offer spots for both campers and tents.
