This unit is a perfect fit for a hunter looking to plan a DIY style hunt. There is over 100,000 acres of Fort Pierre National Grassland which is over half of the total acres of the unit. This is a very remote unit with no amenities throughout, a hunt here will require an amount of driving back and forth into the unit each day, or a primitive camp set up. There is a solid population of antelope found here. There are no major river systems, but there are many creek beds and excellent habitat in all directions. There is a large amount of agriculture in the southeast corner of the unit but the bulk of the unit is made up of raw prairie.
Over half of this unit is made up of Fort Pierre National Grassland, if you are looking for a chance to plan a DIY hunt in the heart of prairie this is an excellent unit to consider.
There is really no major terrain feature in this unit, overall there is very little elevation change across the entirety of this unit. There are countless small creeks across this unit but no river systems at all. The bulk of the unit is made up of CRP and National Grassland. There is also some agriculture in the southeast corner of the unit.
You will find a mix of short and tall prairie grass throughout the unit as well as countless species of wildflowers. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the banks of the countless number of small creeks scattered across the unit.
Highway 83 runs north and south on the western side of the unit. County Highway 22 runs north and south on the eastern side of the unit. There are many roads heading in each direction off of these two main routes in the unit.
This is a very remote unit with no townships throughout. The most notable town is just outside of the unit to the north. Pierre, South Dakota has many lodging options, restaurants, grocery, and sporting goods stores. There are no established campgrounds in this unit, but remote camping is available on the grassland, but be sure to check local, and current regulations prior to heading out.
