Located in almost the exact center of the state this unit is bordered on the north by the Cheyenne River and on the east by the Missouri River. The unit has a very limited amount of public land available to hunt and only a small handful of walk-in areas for DIY hunters to utilize. Smaller populations of antelope can be found here and finding them on ground you can access or have permission to hunt can be tough.
With very limited public access and lower population densities numbers, there are few hunters headed to this unit without a plan around hunting some private property.
There is a substantial amount of agriculture located in the western side of this unit, but overall there are miles and miles of traditional prairie as soon as you are away far from either of the two major rivers in the north and east sides of the unit. The prairie is relatively flat with some roll, and there isn’t a whole lot of elevation change across the entire unit.
Highway 14 is the major route into this unit. There are many county roads that come off of this highway and go in all directions across the unit. In the far southeast corner there is also Highway 83 that comes up from the south and intersects with highway 14 at the town of Pierre, SD but overall there is very little in the unit. State road 1806 heads north off of Highway 14 and makes its way along the Missouri River heading up towards the Cheyenne River.
A mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions as well as countless species of wildflowers can be found in most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of both the Cheyenne and Missouri Rivers as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.
There are many established campgrounds up and down each of the major rivers. If you are looking for hotels, grocery, gas etc. The most notable townships in the unit is located in the southeast corner, Pierre and Fort Pierre will have just about anything you may need during your visit.
