Unit 60A is located in the south central portion of the state with a southern boundary running along the Nebraska border. This unit is primarily private ground with very little state land and just a small portion of walk-in access. It is definitely not a unit you want to make a plan for unless you have prior arrangements to hunt some private land. Mostly composed of prairie and marshland with some small creeks scattered across the unit and the White River cutting across the northern border.
With very limited public access there are few hunters headed to this Unit without a plan around hunting some private property.
This unit is mostly a low rolling prairie with occasional bluffs, but overall no major changes in elevation exist across the entire unit. The most notable terrain feature would be the White River that cuts across the northern border of the unit. Overall it is a mixture of small creek beds, agriculture, and large swampy areas, especially in the far northeast corner.
This unit has a mix of short and tall prairie grass for miles in all directions as well as countless species of wildflowers. Very sparse timber which is primarily a mix of Cottonwood, American Elm, Green Ash, and Bur Oak can be found along the riparian zone of the White River as well as other small creek beds scattered across the unit.
Two major highways in the unit are highway 18 which runs east to west and highway 183 that runs north to south. The White River makes up the Northern border and the Nebraska state line creates the southern border. Overall there are countless country roads covering the majority of the unit which makes navigating from one area to the next very simple. There is very little public ground in this unit and without a solid plan on some private ground you will have a very difficult time locating areas to hunt. The only other major road in the unit is highway 44.
Located in the Central portion of the unit where highway 18 and highway 44 meet is Winner, South Dakota. This town has a population of just under a thousand people. It has a number of amenities you would not normally find in a town this small from drug stores and trading posts as well as locally owned restaurants and a few fast food chains. You should be able to get anything you may need outside of any major sporting good purchases. There are a number of lodging options from bigger chains to locally owned hotels. There are no locations to camp in this unit.
