This unit is located in the north western portion of the state with the North Dakota state line acting as the northern border. This unit is rather remote with very few services available except for a few small townships along the interstate to the north, the biggest being Lemmon, SD. There are two major rivers running through this unit, the North Fork Grand River and the South Fork Grand River, both of which offer some fantastic habitat, as well as miles of rolling hills covered in CRP and grasslands.

This unit consists of primarily private land with the exception of some scattered walk-in access and grasslands. If you are planning a hunt in this unit it would be in your best interest to arrive with prior arrangements made on some portion of private land.

The vast majority of the unit consists of broken, rolling hills and river bottoms with the exception of some agriculture in the mix. There is a little under a thousand feet of elevation change across the entire unit.

Hwy 20 makes up the southern border, with Hwy 75 to the west, and Hwy 73 to the east heading north to Hwy 12 and the state line creating the northern border. There are a number of county roads covering the majority of the unit which makes navigating to one spot or the other very simple. There is a decent amount of public ground in this unit, consisting mostly of grasslands and walk-in areas where access is good. The majority of the unit is private though, so written permission is required when hunting those areas. It is a good idea to have a digital mapping system handy.

A mix of short and tall prairie grass and countless species of wildflowers can be found in most areas of the unit that haven’t been turned for agricultural purposes. Very sparse timber along river bottoms, which is primarily Cottonwood, can be found along the riparian zone of small creek beds scattered across the unit.

Located in the northeast corner of the unit along Interstate 12 and Hwy 73 is Lemmon, South Dakota. Lemmon has a number of amenities from drug stores, locally owned restaurants and groceries. There are a number of lodges and motels in the town as well. Because of the close proximity to Shadehill Reservoir, a popular recreation area, it is a good idea to call ahead and make reservations. If you are looking for a place to camp there are very limited locations in the unit, but there are a number of established campgrounds around Shadehill Reservoir.
