On the Ground

Located in the south-central part of the state, this unit makes up the eastern third of the larger San Juan, Elk Ridge unit. The terrain can be challenging to hunt, with low deer densities, but there is always the potential to encounter a great buck. Hunting in this area demands a great deal of determination, effort, and perseverance.

Terrain

The terrain in this area is characterized by a mix of rugged, high-elevation plateaus, steep canyons, and expansive mesas. The land is often broken up by canyon systems and rocky slopes, creating a challenging and remote environment to navigate. There are also areas of riparian vegetation along intermittent streams and drainages that provide a contrast to the arid surroundings. The terrain is both visually stunning and physically demanding, with steep, rocky areas that require careful hiking and navigation.

  • Roughly 2,900 square miles

  • 98% public land

  • Elevations range from 4,000 - 6,500 feet

The vegetation in this area is diverse, shaped by the area's varied elevations and arid climate. At lower elevations, you'll find typical desert scrub vegetation, including sagebrush, rabbitbrush, and greasewood, which are adapted to the dry conditions. As the elevation increases, the landscape transitions into pinyon-juniper woodlands, where pinyon pine and Utah juniper dominate the terrain, offering important habitat for wildlife. In some of the higher, cooler areas, you may also find ponderosa pine scattered among the woodlands. Along the intermittent streams and drainages, riparian vegetation thrives, including willows, cottonwoods, and sedges, which provide a stark contrast to the surrounding desert scrub.

This area is almost entirely public land and hunters will have plenty of locations to explore. A decent road system can get you most corners of the unit but there is a lot of roadless terrain here that can be very difficult to traverse, if not impossible. This area is incredibly remote and hunters will need to be prepared with extra supplies.

Because this unit is so remote hunters will need to plan for lodging accommodations within the unit, either with primitive camps, camper trailers, or other means. Supplies for your trip will be very important. All gear needs will need to be met prior to heading for this unit.
