Area 1 is located in the northeast corner of the state, north of Sundance. Comprised of high plains desert and forested hills, this unit contains large amounts of private land with small amounts of BLM and State Land. Good numbers of antelope are found here but the best odds for success, and the biggest bucks, are generally found on private lands.

This hunting area has poor access to public land. Using an outfitter to access private land to increase chances of success is an option for some. Concentrate efforts in the western portion of the unit. The terrain in this area allows for good stalking opportunities.

This unit, like other surrounding units, consists of a variety of grassy or desert-like open prairie with large basins, creek bottoms and rolling hills that provide good opportunities for stalking. Private ranch and farm lands in the area can attract antelope from the surrounding country. Physically covering ground throughout the area will be easy and straightforward.

State highways, county roads and smaller two-track roads provide good public access to hunters in this area. The area is bordered by County Roads 68, 85 and 145 on the west, the Montana state line on the north, Wyoming Highways 112 and 24 on the east and U.S. Highway 14 and County Roads 116 and 263 on the west.

This unit is comprised of open, high desert prairie typically among sagebrush or grasslands. Rocky bluffs, sagebrush and ponderosa pines can be found as the elevation increases.

Sundance is the closest town and offers many options for lodging, groceries, gas and other amenities. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can camp in remote locations found within the unit.
