Hunters are expressing concern about antelope numbers in Wyoming's Area 101, with reports suggesting a significant impact from the winter of 2022-23. Feedback indicates notably tough conditions, potentially affecting game availability and movement patterns. Those considering hunting later in the season, such as mid-October, should be informed about these potential challenges and possibly adjust their strategies accordingly. It's advisable for hunters to stay updated on any official winter kill estimates and consider scouting the area prior to their hunt to better assess the current animal presence and behavior.
Located in the Pinedale region the west side of the state of Wyoming, Unit 101 is a great place for antelope hunters looking for a fun hunt and for the possibility of an above average antelope buck. Long season dates and a good population of antelope give hunters a real possibility of hunting an exceptional animal.
Unit 101 is considered to be an above average unit for antelope hunting. This unit has produced some great bucks historically.
Unit 101 consists of rolling hills, ravines and drainages giving antelope lots of places to hide and seek cover. Hunters will find numerous roads to travel and will be able to find areas with water and plenty of antelope to pursue. This unit has diverse terrain throughout and hunters will find terrain that varies from very flat to areas of rolling hills and drainages.
Hunters will find a variety of access roads and areas to travel throughout the unit. Roads vary from well maintained gravel roads to seldom travelled two track type roads. Most roads can be travelled using most vehicles but a high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. Some roads in the unit can become impassable with weather. An ATV or side by side vehicle can be used to navigate the unit quickly.
Most of the unit consists of typical Wyoming vegetation. Grass and Sagebrush is the main vegetation with the exception being the high elevation area of the unit where the vegetation consists of aspen and mixed conifer.
