Following the Greybull River, this area’s terrain, quantity of antelope and large amount of public access make it a good hunting unit.

There is good public access and a variety of terrain to hunt. Good numbers of antelope are found within the unit and above average bucks can be harvested. Once the rifle opener starts, you should expect to see the majority of antelope take cover and migrate to some of the private parcels.

This area is made up of large rolling sagebrush draws, grassy ridges and valleys with steep creek cuts. The prairie goes up to the mountains and US Forest Service land. The unit can get very steep and high in elevation with some antelopes found above 10,000 feet.

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

Lower elevations have sagebrush and grass dominated vegetation types. The higher elevations on Carter Mountain have lodgepole pine, juniper and quaking aspen.

The Pitchfork Ranch is available to hunting in this area. The combination of BLM, state lands and the Pitchfork gives hunters a lot of land to hunt for an antelope. Most county roads are well maintained within this unit, so ATV's/UTV's may not be necessary.

Meeteetse is the nearest town to this area and has two hotels, a grocery store and gas station. Cody is 14 miles from the north end of this unit and has many lodging options, restaurants and gas stations. Camping on State Land in WY is prohibited but hunters can camp on BLM in a specific location for up to 14 days within any 28-day period.
