Area 9 is located on the eastern border of the state, northeast of Douglas. Made up of high plains desert and forested hills, this unit contains mostly private lands with some BLM and State lands.
This hunt area has poor general access. The state of Wyoming does own a large parcel of land in this unit. An outfitter will be beneficial to access private lands. Antelope are found throughout the area, and the terrain found here is ideal for stalking. Lance Creek and Horseshoe Hills are popular and antelope can usually be seen around these locations.
This area consists of a variety of grassy or desert-like open prairie with large basins, creek bottoms and rolling hills that provide opportunities for stalking. Private ranch and farm lands found in this area can draw antelope from the surrounding prairie.
Public access in this unit is poor, but does offer well-maintained state highways, county roads and smaller two-tracks provide hunters with access throughout the area. There are some Walk-In access areas that give access to private land. The area is bordered by County Roads 53, 23 and 18 and Wyoming Highways 270 and 271 on the north, the South Dakota state line on the east, U.S. Highway 20 on the south and County Road 46 on the west. This unit is comprised of open, high desert prairie typically among sagebrush or grasslands. Rocky bluffs, sagebrush, cedars and small trees are usually found at higher elevations. Some private irrigated croplands can draw antelope from the surrounding prairie.
Douglas is the closest town and offers many options for lodging, groceries, gas and other amenities. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can camp in remote locations.
