This hunt area is located in Southwestern Wyoming north of Interstate 80 and west of Highway 191. This area has seen slow herd growth, but hunters still have a great chance to harvest a nice buck. Terrain here lets hunters glass a lot of land from high vantage points.
A lot of large herds that can be found in several locations throughout the unit. Trophy quality bucks are hard to find, but can be found with time in the field glassing and scouting the unit. Large herds are found in areas along Alkali Creek and Big Sandy River. Manmade waterholes provide year-round water sources.
Unit 96 consists of long deep canyons, sagebrush flats and river bottoms. Big hills are all across the area with vantage points for glassing.
Some BLM land with ranch lands in the west and northeast can be found here with good public access. Most roads are marked with signs here. Seedskadee National Wildlife refuge can be found on the Green River and has rules and regulations on access. ATV's, UTV's and four-wheel drive vehicles with chains are recommended during the later season hunts as road conditions can change rapidly.
The majority of the unit is dominated by sagebrush, bitterbrush, juniper and prairie grass. A few ranches and the Green River provide creek bottoms that have willows and cottonwood trees.
Most hunters will camp remotely on BLM land on the unit with no permit required. Lodging at multiple motels can be located south of the area in Green River.
