This unit is located in the northwest portion of the state between Jackson and Dubois, south of State Highway 26/287. Unlike most of the units in this part of the state, this unit does not have any Wilderness Areas, which is a big plus for nonresidents. Unfortunately, this unit does not have very good harvest numbers.

Most of the black bears harvested in this unit are taken in the fall, usually a target of opportunity while people are out deer or elk hunting.

This entire unit is located in the rugged mountains of Wyoming. This unit is south of State Highway 287/26, which runs from Dubois to Moran Junction, known as Togwotee Pass. In contrast to surrounding mountains, the mountains in this unit peak out at around 10,000 feet. They are not nearly as steep as the mountains in surrounding units.

Access in and around this unit is great. There are two main access roads for this unit. State Highway 287/26 provides access to the northern portion, and there are a couple dozen roads and trails that lead you deep into the mountains. Along the southern border of the unit, the Gros Ventre Road/Cottonwood Creek Roads, leading from the small town of Kelly, will get you anywhere you want to go.

The mountains in this unit are your typical timber covered ridges with open meadows scattered throughout. Once above timberline, you are going to find what you would typically think of in an alpine environment, big basins with bald rocky mountain peaks. Like all mountains in Wyoming, you will find lodgepole pines, white pines, juniper, and aspen trees throughout the range.

If you decide to hunt this unit, you are limited to two towns for all of your supplies. If you are hunting the northern and eastern portion of this unit, Dubious will probably be your best option. The western and southern portion is best supported by Jackson. Because of the distance you have to travel to these towns, it’s highly recommended you bring all of your supplies with you. As for lodging and camping, there are quite a few options for you. On the pass, there are two main lodges, Hatchet Resort and Togwotee Mountain Lodge. There are three established campgrounds along State Highway 287/26. If you are willing to travel more, there are more campgrounds closer to Dubois and Jackson.
