This unit, located in the central portion of the state near the city of Casper, can be a very difficult unit to hunt due to the large tracts of private land throughout the entire area. What public land there is, is checker boarded throughout private land. There are three prominent mountains in this unit, Casper Mountain, Muddy Mountain and the Deer Creek Range. Virtually all of Casper Mountain is private land, and there are huge private ranches on and around Muddy Mountain. There is a small section of National Forest in the Deer Creek Range.

With a low average bear harvest each year and with the limited amount of public land, this unit should not be high on your list.

The terrain in this unit is much like the rest of the units in Wyoming with sagebrush covered prairies giving way to steep rugged mountains. When off the mountains, sagebrush covers the landscape. As you gain elevation, scrub oak and junipers give way to thick lodgepole pines covering the north slopes. The mountain tops themselves are not as steep and rugged as others are on the western side of the state, but the draws are cut deep and are very steep.

The majority of this area is off the mountain and is covered in sagebrush prairies and badlands. You will find irrigated farm fields along the rivers and streams. Lodgepole pines are the most common trees on the mountain, along with small patches of aspens scattered throughout the area. There are also large sections of willows and berry patches in the creek bottoms. There have been quite a few fires in recent years in this area which make for great habitat in the spring once greenup starts.

This unit can be deceptive. Unlike most mountain ranges in Wyoming, this unit has only a small section of National Forest in the Deer Creek Range. Casper Mountain is virtually all private land, and Muddy Mountain has large tracts of private land scattered throughout it. Much of Casper Mountain is covered in homes, basically making it a small community. There are plenty of roads on the mountains, but many of them are private and block access. There are lots of walk-in hunting areas in this unit, but as of now, none of them are open for bear hunting. You may be able to gain access by contacting these landowners and asking for permission to hunt.

Casper has lots of hotels and places to shop for food and supplies. There are a few camps and lodges on Casper Mountain, but your choices are limited in this unit. If you decided to just pitch a tent on public land, remember, in Wyoming you can not camp overnight on state land. So make sure you are either on a section of BLM land or a small section of National Forest.
