This area is located in southwestern Wyoming south of Rock Springs. It is known for quality bucks. The terrain here allows for hunters to glass a lot of area from high vantage points. This area produces a few Boone and Crockett and Pope & Young bucks every year.
The archery season is the best time to find bucks in bachelor groups in summer patterns.
This area has long, deep canyons and sagebrush flats. A few mountain ranges provide vantage points for glassing and locating bucks. Kinney Rim, Black Butte and Pine Butte are the highest peaks in the unit.
This area is BLM land with a few ranch lands with good public access. Most roads are marked with BLM signs. There is no wilderness is found in Unit 101 that will restrict nonresident access.
The majority of the area is dominated by sagebrush, bitterbrush, juniper, pinyon and prairie grass. Higher mountains have conifers covering the landscape. Willows and cottonwood trees can be found on some ranches and creek bottoms.
Hunters can camp remotely on the BLM land on the unit with no permit required. Lodging at multiple motels can be found just north of the Unit in Rock Springs and Wamsutter.
