Area 22, also known as Douglas, is located 50 miles east of Casper in central Wyoming. This area holds quality hunting opportunities along with a view that allows a hunter to see for miles. Mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope and elk all call this area home.
Hunting opportunities for deer in Area 22 for both mule deer and whitetails can be excellent. Access to available hunting in this area is difficult at times, and public land can be tough to locate. Private land access will enhance both quality of animals and harvest opportunities.
Area 22 is a mixture of rolling grassy hills, cottonwood creek bottoms and rocky broken sandstone terrain. The terrain is fairly gentle.
Access will be the greatest challenge that hunters will face in this area. Only a very small percentage of area 22 is public land, with the larger sized tracts of accessible hunting ground occurring in the central and north central portion of the unit. A handful of walk-in areas do exist in cooperation with landowners and provide opportunities to those looking for more than BLM accessibility. Outfitted hunting opportunities for different species are available in area 22 providing private land access.
This area embodies the ideal western hunt, complete with vast expanses of sagebrush and cactus clumps, rolling grass covered hills, rocky canyons and sandstone rims, with the occasional twisted pines. Cottonwood creek bottoms will mark areas with water both above and below ground.
Casper and Douglas both provide camping, motel, restaurant, grocery and services for hunters. Both also offer vehicle and medical services. Casper/Natrona County International Airport can accommodate hunters that chose to fly in with rental vehicles available.
