This unit is located in the southwestern corner of the state and is made up of high plain desert and a portion of the Uinta Mountains. Scattered populations of elk are found here throughout the unit with populations increasing later in the year as snow pushed elk down from the neighboring state of Utah. Public land is in abundance here and hunters with a tag will find plenty of options when looking for huntable grounds.
Hunters can expect rugged and moderate terrain with elk mainly found in the southern parts near the Utah border. This is a big unit with a lot of drainages to hunt and is a good place for hunters to take branch-antlered bulls.
This unit goes from Interstate 80, south across the high desert and into the Uinta Mountains and National Forest. The terrain is more gently contoured at lower elevations but changes to steep and rugged in the mountainous areas particularly on the southern end.
Public access in this unit is good with several well-maintained roads, a network of forest roads and smaller two track roads. Most roads here are in good shape, with a few passable only with four-wheel drive or ATVs. Packing in with horses or backpack hunting is possible, but day hunts are more common.
A lot of high desert habitat with some timbered slopes, and upland areas dominated by sagebrush, grass and mountain shrubs. Timber stands consist of limber pine, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, subalpine fir and scattered pockets of aspen.
Evanston is the nearest town, and has several options for lodging. Groceries, gas stations and other stores can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can also camp in remote locations.
