Area 124, also known as Powder Rim in Wyoming, offers a rewarding hunting experience, especially for those prepared to navigate its challenging terrain. Successful hunters emphasize the importance of scouting and understanding the area's vast landscape prior to the season. They note that the unit can become challenging due to unpredictable weather, making early-season hunts preferable for access. Consistently, hunters suggest prioritizing proper gear and vehicle readiness, as well as being adaptable to the migration patterns and movements of local game like elk and antelope.
This area is located in southwestern Wyoming, south of Interstate 80 and is known for high success rates of harvest and large bulls. Herd health is good and the quality of animals and chances to harvest a bull are very high. The terrain allows hunters to glass a lot of area from high vantage points.
Trophy quality bulls are located throughout the area. The beginning of the archery season has bulls focused on looking for cows. Locating herds by glassing during the rifle season is recommended.
