This unit is found in the south-central portion of the state and features a good offering of public lands and a scattered herd of elk. Most of this area is high plains desert with scattered timber patches on some of the northern facing slopes and creek drainages. Hunting in this unit will be glassing intensive and hunters will need to be prepared to cover some ground in search of elk.
This unit generally serves as more of a wintering area for elk and tends to hold very few animals until later in the year. Snow can greatly impact success.
This unit goes from Interstate 80, south across high desert plains and the Severson Flats to Sage Creek. Mountains here are gently contoured throughout most of the unit, with the land surrounding Chokecherry Knob being slightly more steep and rugged. In general, this area is easy to traverse and hunters will find little trouble in physically reaching most hunting locations.
Public access in this unit is good, with several well-maintained roads and a network of BLM roads and smaller two tracks. When off the maintained roads, four-wheel drive or ATVs are recommended. This unit is bordered by Wyoming Highway 71 and County Road 401 on the west, Interstate 80 on the north, the North Platte River on the east and Sage Creek on the south.
Sagebrush grassland dominates most of the area, with greasewood growing along the basins and slopes. There are not a lot of trees in this unit.
Rawlins is the closest town, and has a lot of options for lodging. Groceries, gas stations and other stores can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can camp in remote locations.
