This unit is made up of high plains desert and the Sierra Madre Range in the south-central part of the state. A good distribution of public lands is found here and elk populations are stable. The southwest corner of the unit is heavily timbered and mountainous while the remainder of the unit is open and broken. Optics and physical preparation will be important for this hunt.

Hunters can expect moderate to rugged terrain with elk usually found in the National Forest. This is a big area with a lot of country to hunt and hunters will need to be prepared to cover some country in search of elk.

This unit goes from Sage Creek and the North Platte River, south and west across high desert plains into the National Forest. It is more gently contoured at lower elevations, changing to steep and rugged in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Hunters will find little trouble in traversing most of this area but when hunting the mountainous regions it can be physically taxing.

The public access in this unit is very good with several well-maintained roads, a network of forest roads and smaller two-track roads. Most roads here are in good condition, with a few passable only with four-wheel drive or ATVs. Packing in with horses or backpack hunting is possible, but day hunts are more common. To the north, this unit is bordered by Sage Creek and the North Platte River. Wyoming Highways 130, 230 and 70 can be found to the east and south, with the Continental Divide on the west.

Timbered slopes and upland areas are dominated by sagebrush, grass and mountain shrubs. Timber stands typically consist of limber pine, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, subalpine fir and scattered pockets of aspen.

Saratoga is the closest town, and has a lot of options for lodging. Groceries, gas stations and other stores can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can camp in remote locations.
