Located in the south-central part of the state, this area is made up of high desert plains and mountains. This unit has expansive amounts of BLM and State Lands and is bordered by U.S. Highway 287 on the north and east. A small but very healthy herd of elk is found in this area and any hunters holding a tag here will be in for a great hunt.
This area has moderate/rugged terrain with elk located in the timbered Green Mountains. This is a good sized area with plenty of country to hunt and can also be a great place for hunters to take branch antlered bulls. The bigger elk in this area typically come from the more rugged and remote locations.
This area stretches from high desert plains along U.S. Highway 287 to County Road 22 on the south. Elevations range from 6,300 feet at Muddy Gap to Green Mountain at 9,100 feet. The area is gently contoured at lower elevations and changes to steep and rugged terrain around Green Mountain. In the mountainous area hunters will encounter much more timber and overall tougher hkiking conditions.
Public access in this unit is excellent with roads throughout. There are many secondary roads and a few closed roads good for hiking. Packing in with horses or backpack hunting is not necessary, but can allow hunters to access remote locations. Day hunts are more common in this area.
Low and middle elevations are a mix of grassy, sage covered plains with long ridges and valleys. Higher elevations on Green Mountain and Crooks Mountain are heavily timbered with Douglas fir and occasional aspens.
Lander is the nearest town to the unit and offers several options for lodging, groceries, gas, sporting goods and other amenities. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. There is one designated campground located in the unit. Hunters can also camp in remote locations.
