This unit is located south of the Greybull River in Northwestern Wyoming and is part of the Shosone National Forest. There is a lot of rugged country in this area, with a lot of access roads, and less wilderness area's than its neighboring units. There is a healthy population of animals here and is one of the more sought after elk units. Those willing to put in the effort should have no issues finding success.
There is typically good opportunity to harvest a branch-antlered bull here, with hunters having the chance to take a good 6 point bull. The western portion of the area is within the Washakie Wilderness Area that nonresidents can not hunt without an outfitter or resident guide. Grizzly bears can be found here.
Terrain in the Washakie Wilderness changes from valleys to mountain peaks. Some valleys and canyons in the wilderness section are not as steep as other units in this area, with more gradual terrain coming down into the Greybull River. Upper elevations typically have grassy meadows, open rocky faces and smaller pine pockets. The creeks and the Greybull River bottom are mainly timbered, with some remote areas.
Wilderness
Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.
Access into the wilderness area here is limited, with the main access coming from the Jack Creek Trailhead. The eastern portion of range and unit has good access coming from the Pitchfork and Wood River Roads. Roads going up Timber Creek, Dick Creek and Phelps Mountain can also lead to good elk country. The only Hunt Management Area here is in the Pitchfork Ranch. ATV's, UTV's and 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended in case of inclement weather.
The Greybull River is the northern boundary of this area. Middle elevations are made of canyons and ridges with grass mixed with pockets of timber. Lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, subalpine fir and some other trees can be seen near the timberline.
Lodging and accommodations can be found in Meeteetse, with grocery stores and gas stations available. Lodging can be found at the Oasis Motel. Camping is allowed on public land here.
