Located in the Southeast part of the state, this unit has a lot of BLM and state land, as well as the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests. High elk numbers with quality bulls available. No wilderness and plenty of access throughout the entire unit. Those willing to put in the effort should find success.
Moderate to rugged terrain here, with elk all throughout the unit. This is a large area with a lot of country to hunt. Good hunting on both public and private lands for archery season. Rifle season dates may require private access or booking with an outfitter to improve your chances at success. Large ranches are leased by some reputable outfitters.
Terrain here is easier to hike through at lower elevations, but is very steep and rugged in the mountains. The bigger elk typically come from the more rugged and remote locations, as well on private ranches throughout the unit.
Vegetation in the Laramie Range has a lot of timbered slopes with some upland areas dominated by sagebrush, grass and mountain shrubs. Timber stands have limber pine, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, subalpine fir and Rocky Mountain juniper.
Public access in this unit is good on National Forest, but unless hunters have horses to travel far with, it can be difficult to avoid crowding near the trailheads. Large private ranches will also limit access into some good elk habitat. Hiring an outfitter can help to access some of the quality private ranches. This area also has a lot of well-maintained roads, a network of BLM roads and smaller two track roads. The mountains here are the toughest to access, but is possible with four-wheel drive or ATVs. The unit is covered by a big trail system. Packing in with horses or backpack hunting is possible, but day hunts are more common.
Wheatland is the closest town to the unit, and has a lot of lodging options. Groceries, gas and other stores can be found here as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location. Hunters can camp in remote locations.
