Conservative seasons are proposed in these hunt areas in order to address the low numbers and limited recruitment the moose population has experienced in recent years. Poor calf production along with predation are a concern in this area.
This area is considered to be an average moose area in the state. Although low herd numbers are a concern, occasional 40” plus moose scoring above 150” B&C are harvested in this region.
Mountain lakes scattered throughout the area, along with streams, provide ample areas for moose habitat. Spectacular views of the Grand Tetons can be seen from numerous parts of this area. Large mountain basins with grassy meadows are scattered throughout. Large conifer ridgelines run through the area and give hunters good area to glass long distances.
Plenty of rivers and streams with riparian habitat with willows, cottonwoods, shrubs, grasses and forbs that moose tend to flourish in can be located throughout the area. Lodgepole pine, subalpine fir, whitebark pine and limber pine are typical in the area. Native grasses, forbs and some sagebrush are found throughout mid elevations. Grasses and forbs can be found at higher elevations and give good habitat and feed for the moose population. Much of the southern and western portions of the area are agricultural fields located on private land.
Dirt two track roads are located through much of the area giving hunters good access to this mostly public area. Access to much of the south side of the area can be gained by using the Gros Ventre Road. For access to the west and north sides of the area hunters can use Highways 89 and 26. For areas with no roads hunters can use multiple hiking trails to access most of the interior parts of the area.
A small number of lodging options can be found near the area in Moran. Groceries and fuel may also be purchased in Moran. Ample improved campgrounds can be found in this area as well as dispersed camping areas that are open for public use.
