Area 44 is located in southwestern Wyoming, south of Interstate 80. This area has had a small increase in its moose populations in recent years. The terrain here allows hunters to glass a lot of area from high ridge points but the broken terrain can hide moose with relative ease.

A smaller density of moose will be found here but the open nature of the unit can still offer hunters good options at locating bulls.

Area 44 consists of long, deep canyons of prairie grass and sagebrush ridge. Little Mountain, Pine Mountain, and Aspen Mountain are the highest peaks in this area. Great glassing opportunities will be found here but hunters should be aware that the many folds in the terrain can easily hide moose. Some cross country travel may be necessary when locating bulls.Roughly

This unit is made up of BLM land with a few ranch lands that have good public access. Most roads in this area are marked with BLM signs. The area is located east of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, west of Sweetwater County Road 19 and north of the Colorado and Utah Border.

The area is dominated by pinyon, prairie grass and other conifers. Higher mountain peaks have aspen and conifers. Willows and cottonwood trees can be found in some ranches and creek bottoms.

Hunters can camp on the BLM land within the unit with no permit required. Established campsites are located along the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Lodging at multiple motels can be found just north in Rock Springs and Green River.8
