Goat habitat is rough, steep and can be a physically demanding hunt. This area has the tag quota and offers great opportunities at mature billies.
Likely not the place to hunt for a high scoring trophy billy, but this can be a good hunt for a mature goat with a nice hide in some beautiful country. A two month long season will give hunters more than enough time to find and take a goat. Hunting pressure is very low.
Typical of mountain goat areas, it has steep, rough and unforgiving terrain. Goats in this hunt area are typically found in the high elevation rough terrain north of highway 212. They can also be found in the cliffs and areas above timberline near Deep Lake. Terrain located along the gorge just north of highway 296 also has great goat habitat and is very steep and rough.
Wilderness
Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.
Mountain goats are typically found above timberline and in terrain that is very steep and rocky with limited vegetation. Timberline is typically at 10,000 feet. Spruce, pines and firs grow densely below alpine tundra in rugged, rocky ridges and peaks. Middle elevations have firs, aspen and grassy meadows mixed with sagebrush.
Highway 296 off of highway 120 north out of Cody serves as the southern boundary of the unit. Highway 212 branching off of highway 120 towards Montana crosses though some great goat habitat. Several forest service access roads branch from these highways and will allow hunters to glass a lot of goat terrain. Hunting itself is going to require hiking or backpacking. There is some designated wilderness in the unit that will require nonresidents to have a guide to hunt.
Cody is located approximately 25 miles southeast of the hunt area. It has several hotels, campgrounds, gas stations, markets, restaurants, bars and a sporting goods store.
