This area is made up of mountains located in the Bridger Teton National Forest near the western edge of the state. Bordered by Moran Junction, Jackson and the Hoback Junction on the west, this unit contains a lot of public land and includes a large wilderness area in the Gros Ventre Mountain Range.

Sheep are scattered throughout the area. Sheep typically stay up high above timberline until snowfall moves them down. Fires in recent years have improved the habitat. Good rams can be found with hard work.

This unit runs from the valley floor and river bottoms on the west near Jackson and Bondurant, eastward across the Gros Ventre Mountain Range and ends at the continental divide in the Wind River Mountain Range. The area is very steep and rugged. Timberline is found at 10,000 feet. Thick timbered foothills quickly turn to rugged alpine basins and granite cliffs.

Wilderness

Under Wyoming law nonresidents are not permitted to hunt big game or trophy game in any federally designated wilderness areas without the presence of a licensed guide or resident companion. The resident companion must first get a free non-commercial guide license from a Game and Fish office. The law does not prohibit nonresidents from hiking, fishing or hunting game birds, small game, or coyotes in wilderness areas.

Public access in this area is excellent from all sides and contains several well-maintained roads and a network of hiking and horseback trails. Packing in with horses is recommended. Areas that typically hold sheep are located miles away from roads. This area is bordered by U.S. Highway 26/287 on the north, the Green River and continental divide on the east and the Hoback River and Bridger Teton National Forest boundary on the south.

The country near timberline is made up of thick spruce and fir forests with some white bark pine with grassy meadows and ridges. Sheep feed on a variety of sedges and bunch grasses in the alpine basins and around rocky scree fields. Middle elevations have Douglas fir and aspen.

Jackson and Pinedale are the closest towns and offer many options for lodging. Motels found in Jackson include the Rustic Inn Creekside Resort, Super 8, Anglers Inn and Flying Saddle Resort. Motels in Pinedale include the Best Western Pinedale Inn, High Country Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites and Pinedale’s Cozy Cabins. Groceries, gas and other amenities can be found in these towns as well. Camping is allowed on all public ground for up to 16 days in one location and designated campgrounds are found throughout the unit.
