Utah's 2026 Big Game Permit Recommendations Are Out — Here's What You Need to Know

If you're applying for Utah big game tags in 2026, now is the time to pay attention. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) recently released its 2026 permit recommendations ahead of the April Regional Advisory Council (RAC) meetings and the April 30th Wildlife Board meeting in Farmington Bay. This packet is loaded with data — and in my opinion, there is some really compelling information for hunters when you're applying, especially if you're chasing mule deer or planning to burn points on a once-in-a-lifetime tag.

Let me break down the biggest takeaways for you.

Mule Deer: More Permits

Let's start with what I know most of you are here for — mule deer. The headline number is 86,200 total general season buck deer permits recommended for 2026, which is an increase of 6,425 permits over 2025.

The statewide 3-year average buck-to-doe ratio is sitting right at 22.2 bucks per 100 does — which is squarely within or above objective for most units.

Of the 31 general season units, three units required board action due to recommendations exceeding the 20% threshhold: Beaver, West; Kamas; and Wasatch Mtns, West. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources recommends an overall increase of 1,300 permits across these three units to move toward the buck-to-doe ratio objectives for each unit. The Kamas reduction is worth noting — it's one of the few units seeing a permit decrease. The 3-year average buck-to-doe ratio of 17.5 is below the 18-20 objective, and the DWR is pulling back to let that herd rebalance.

Units Showing Strong Herd Growth

If you dig into the herd status data, a few units really stand out in terms of population trajectory.

Keep in mind that Utah's long-term management objective is 404,900 deer statewide.

Limited-Entry Deer: Notable Changes

On the limited-entry side, a couple of units are getting permit increases that require board action:

The Paunsaugunt is also seeing some adjustments — management buck permits are increasing by 10, while cactus buck permits are dropping by 10.

Henry Mountains ticks up slightly — from 44 to 46 total premium permits (addition of 2 any legal weapon permits).

Also, Cache now has 12 permits from 10 in 2025.

And Wasatch Mtns, West now has 40 permits from 33 in 2025.

Once-in-a-Lifetime Species

The once-in-a-lifetime species are trending positive in 2026, almost across the board.

Moose: +7 Permits Statewide

Utah is recommending 113 total moose permits for 2026, up from 106 last year. The Cache unit sees the biggest single jump — from 15 to 17 total permits — and Kamas goes from 5 to 6. If you're sitting on moose points, the trend is moving in the right direction.

Box Elder, Cache, and North Slope Summit are all producing bulls averaging 5+ years.

Mountain Goat: +9 Permits Statewide

Mountain goat permits are climbing to 112 total in 2026, up from 103. The biggest increase is on the Nebo unit — jumping from 18 to 24 any legal weapon permits. La Sal Mountains also picks up a permit, going from 11 to 12. The High Uintas East and Leidy Peak units each gain a permit as well.

Bighorn Sheep: Slight Decrease

Desert bighorn comes in at 85 total permits (down 3 from 2025), and Rocky Mountain bighorn checks in at 51 permits (down 1).

Bison: Big Changes at Book Cliffs

The biggest once-in-a-lifetime storyline might be bison on the Book Cliffs, Bitter Creek unit. Total permits are jumping from 18 to 38. On the flip side, Henry Mountains bison is seeing a significant reduction — from 82 permits down to 57. In total, permits for bison are increasing from 106 to 113.

Bull Elk: Wasatch Mtns Gets a Major Pullback

Utah's elk population is currently estimated at 83,020 animals against a statewide objective of 80,115 — so the herd is slightly above objective. The 2026 bull elk permit recommendations reflect careful management to fine-tune age structure across units.

The biggest headline: Wasatch Mtns limited-entry bull elk permits are dropping from 726 to 580 — a reduction of 146 permits. This is a deliberate move to increase the average age of harvested bulls on that unit. The 3-year average of 5.1 years is below the 5.5-6.0 year objective, and the DWR is taking action.

On the flip side, a few units are seeing notable increases:

December archery limited-entry permits are increasing from 158 to 193 statewide — that's a significant jump in late-season archery opportunity.

Uinta Basin private-lands-only any bull permits are also increasing from 500 to 750, targeting conflict reduction in agricultural areas.

Manti with a drop from 700 permits to 660 permits.

Antelope: Positive Direction Statewide

Utah is recommending 1,827 total buck antelope permits for 2026 — an increase of 88 permits (about 5%) over 2025. Every single unit in the state is currently meeting or exceeding the 2-3 year average age objective for harvested bucks. That's a great sign for pronghorn hunters.

The Parker Mountain unit sees the most dramatic change — jumping from 200 to 250 total permits as the population there continues to perform. Three units — North Slope Three Corners/West Daggett, San Juan Hatch Point, and Vernal — are seeing small reductions due to declining age trends.

Doe antelope permits are decreasing slightly from 505 to 475 statewide.
