Whitetail bucks reach into the 150” class, with mule deer in the 170” class in this region. This area has some low-impact terrain, with a lot of water sources that make good habitat for big bucks. Hunters here can stalk mule deer in the mornings, and wait on irrigated fields for whitetail in the afternoon.
This region is known for the Boysen Reservoir in the southern end of the region with a lot of other rivers and creeks that come through the reservoir. Large canyons lead into most of the water sources that have rocky outcroppings that mule deer typically like. Rolling hills around irrigated ranch land with pockets of thick brush are where whitetail can typically be found. The Bighorn Mountains in the northern portions of the region have higher elevations and deeper canyons that large mule deer herds can be found in.
Region M has several tracts of BLM land that provide hunting areas for both whitetail and mule deer. Roads accessing most of the region are maintained and have road signs. Tracts of private property can limit some access in certain locations. Private landowners will typically give access to irrigated fields and river bottoms inside of the private land.
With limited elevation changes throughout most of the region, mule deer will key in on long deep canyons with high sagebrush ridges and grassy pockets. The Bighorn Mountains have deep canyons, rocky ridges and thick forests where some bucks can be found. Spotting mule deer with optics, then stalking in close for a shot by either bedding the bucks or sitting on a trail and ambushing can be good options here. Hunters should try to find herds before the season and pattern the bucks.
Whitetail deer are common in all portions of Region M. The biggest bucks and biggest herds of whitetail can be found in the northern part of the region near the irrigated land in Worland. Ambushing bucks on well-traveled trails from ground blinds are good methods for bowhunting in most of the region. For rifle hunters, spot and stalk during this time of the year can be the best way to have multiple opportunities at a good buck.
