This large unit, located between the Yakima and Columbia River, is basically all Corps of Engineers ground and is commonly referred to as the Yakima Training Center. There are a few resident deer and elk throughout the unit. Since this unit encompasses the Yakima Firing Center, special regulations apply. Know what you are applying for when putting in for special permits as this is a very unique hunt opportunity that is not right for everyone.
Training exercises can alter your hunt.
The terrain consists of wide open scabland land with rolling hills and the Saddle Mountains, Umtanum and Yakima Ridges running through the unit from east to west.
There is very limited public access in this unit.
The open scabland holds sagebrush, buckbrush, and a variety of short, warm and cool season bunch grasses. The eastern edge has all been recently burned between 2016 and 2018.
There are no campsites within this unit. Your best options for lodging, gas stations, restaurants, and a grocery store are Yakima and surrounding towns.
